You may wonder am I going to tell a story about my big decision? Don't let the title fool you, I just want to show you how to select your major. Choosing a major is one of the problems that most college students struggling with and of course I was one of them. All the colleges and universities offers hundred of choices, so how am I going to choose one from the list? It is quite challenging at first, but remember do not PANIC, I repeat do not PANIC. It is time to explore and discover about yourself. I am going to share a few tips to begin with.
First of all, think of your favorite subject. Can't think of it because everything is just plain in high school? Don't worry many universities does not need you to decide your major until junior year (year 3), so you can take your time to play around with varies subject and find out where your true passion at. You may consider these factors before choosing a major, they are your dream job, money issue and interest.
Spent some time to career fair, take a look at what kind of job you are interested in and don't be hesitate to ASK, ask the workers or counselors there to find out what do they do? what is their pay? what course you need to learn before becoming one of them? don't forget the benefits and also, ask them why do they choose the job. Therefore, you know the job better and see if it suits you/do you like it?
Talk about money, college is a big investment and it will pay you back after graduating in many ways beyond salary, but it also depends on how well do you do when you started working. According to PayScale.com, the majors that lead to the highest salaries include just about any type of engineering actuarial mathematics, computer science, physics, statistics, government, and economics. However, keep your dream lifestyle in mind too, you might dislike all these. Don't study any of these when you have no interest just because you want a good pay job, it will only be a nightmare.
Next, please figure out what do you like. In that way, it will be easier when come to deciding a major. But if you have no idea like me, no worries, do it another way. Think of what you hate, I hate maths/something related much to numbers and equations. Then I make a list of what I will never study as my major, the list includes finance, accounting, business and so on. Cancel all that out and you will get a smaller scope to choose from.
Other than that, talk to your close friends who really know you well and can actually describe your special traits and personalities. Ask them to help you choose what suits you the best and they are sometimes the best person to talk to because they understand you better than yourself. They help you to find out your advantages and what do you lack in terms of behavior.
Okay, let's say you can't think of anything of yourself and you have no friends, you can speak to your parents about this. They might give you some ideas to lead you to what you want to be. Asian typically won't ask their parents because Asian parents tend to choose for you, they want you to be doctor/ lawyer/ banker and others. But nowadays they are more open-minded (like mine), they are very supportive of what you want to do as long as it is not for bad purposes. So have a discussion with them, the best counselor on earth who does not need a charge of a fee.
Not only that, take some career quizzes online to help you consider. They might be true but still, follow your heart.
Lastly, try as much of different variety of courses as you can in your first 2 years to discover which do you like the most and go for it. I divide all the choices to a few category such as communications, business/maths related, arts and human understanding. Take one or two courses in every category and by the end of your sophomore year (year 2) you can easily pick you major.
Well, study shown that only 27% of US college grads have a job that is actually related to their major. That is interesting and meaning many people out there are doing a job that they never thought of. Cool, so what are you worrying about? You might not get the job that is related to your major, might as well you just study what you like.
Loves, meLodyyap.
